University of Tennessee
The UT Programs Abroad Office (PAO) is housed under the university’s Center for Global Engagement, as part of the integral pieces that internationalize the campus and provide global learning experiences to our students. The team manages 80 faculty-led programs and extends opportunities to students through partnerships with affiliate providers and direct partnerships with a foreign institute, accumulating to over 500 opportunities available for our Volunteers.
Opportunity
Since the pandemic, the whole team has been under an evolution of restructuring procedures and identifying new opportunities in our practices that better align with our newly refined core values: Create Impact, Serve Students, Encourage Growth, Seek Humanity, and Build Community.
Part of this restructuring and evolution is improving our advising model for students to get support at every stage of the process in education abroad.
Therefore, our whole team remodeled the face-to-face advising in order to reach more students and be more accessible to different needs.
Objectives for Advising Revamp
-
Create access and visibility to our office and services through multiple options that meet diverse students’ needs.
-
Streamline the stages for students to go abroad, from learning about our programs, advising for specific programs, to applying and submitting the application.
-
Build community between students and returnees, as well as between the Programs Abroad team as a whole.

Stop #1: Student Peer Advisors
Our student peer advisors are at the forefront to receive our students and give them a 101 about going abroad, how the application process works, how to navigate our program portal, and any other advice on choosing programs.
Stop #2: Programs Abroad Coordinator
Students will have already have a few programs narrowed down and may seek to speak to a Programs Abroad Coordinator to receive comprehensive advising on program and application logistics.
